Free Council Tax Band Checker
Updated: February 2026
Checking your council tax band takes less than a minute with our free tool. There's no sign-up, no payment, and no commitment. You enter your postcode, we pull data from the Valuation Office Agency (VOA), and within seconds you'll know how your band compares to your neighbours. If there's a discrepancy, you could be paying too much council tax — and entitled to a refund.
How the Checker Works
Our band checker follows a simple three-step process. First, you enter your postcode and property details. We then pull the latest band data from the VOA for your property and every comparable property in the area. Finally, we compare your band against the median band of neighbouring properties and present you with a clear, colour-coded result.
The entire process is automated and takes around 60 seconds. You don't need your council tax reference number, account details, or any paperwork — just your postcode and house number.
Understanding Your Results
Within seconds, you'll see a case strength score from 0 to 10, showing whether your council tax band is likely wrong and how strong your evidence is. The higher the score, the stronger the case for a band reduction — and the higher your potential council tax refund.
Alongside the score, we show you exactly what band your neighbours are in, how many properties we compared, and an estimate of any potential refund.
Why Should You Check?
Every property in England and Scotland was assigned a council tax band when the system launched in 1993, based on estimated property values as of April 1991. The original valuations were carried out at speed — in many cases, valuers drove through streets assigning bands based on kerb appeal rather than detailed inspections. Unsurprisingly, errors were common.
The VOA has confirmed that hundreds of thousands of properties remain in the wrong band. For each of those households, that means paying more council tax than they should — every month, year after year. Checking takes less than a minute and could save you thousands of pounds.
Who Can Use the Checker?
Both homeowners and renters can use our tool. If you're a tenant paying council tax, you have the same right to check your band as a homeowner. In fact, renters often have the most to gain — many don't realise they can request a band review, and the resulting refund goes directly to the person who paid the tax.
What If the Checker Flags an Issue?
If your score suggests an issue, you can unlock your Full Intelligence Report from £6.99 — giving you the complete evidence behind your score, a downloadable PDF, and everything you need to understand your case. For those ready to act, the Complete Challenge Bundle (£39.99) includes a pre-populated VOA challenge letter, PAD data request, step-by-step submission guide, and professional comparable analysis.
What Data Do We Use?
TaxBandCheck uses publicly available data from the Valuation Office Agency, which maintains the official register of council tax bands for every property in England. We also use Postcodes.io for accurate location data. No personal data is required to run a check — we only ask for your postcode and property details so we can look up the right records.
