How Scottish Council Tax Works
Council tax bands in Scotland are based on estimated property values as of 1 April 1991 — the same valuation date as England. However, Scotland uses different band thresholds. For example, Band A in Scotland covers properties valued up to £27,000, compared to £40,000 in England. Scotland has 8 bands (A to H), and bands are assigned by your local Scottish Assessor rather than the Valuation Office Agency (VOA) used in England and Wales.

How to Challenge Your Band in Scotland
In Scotland, the process is called a “proposal” rather than a “challenge.” You submit a proposal to your local Scottish Assessor (not the VOA). If the Assessor rejects your proposal, you can appeal to the First-tier Tribunal for Scotland — a free, independent body.
